Abstract
Discriminating approaches to therapeutic intervening on depression and social anxiety are needed because they have differences while having high similarities. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the specific mechanisms of cognitive processes and contents in each disorders for effective therapeutic invention on depression and social anxiety. Accordingly, the relative influences of maladaptive self-focused attention and self-discrepancy on depression and social anxiety in undergraduates were explored with the moderating effect of self-discrepancy in the influence of maladaptive self-focused attention on depression and social anxiety in this study. A total of 470 students from two colleges in Seoul, Gyeonggi and other areas were asked to complete a questionnaire that was constructed based on several relevant instruments, such as Scale for Dispositional Self-focused Attention in Social Situation (SDSAS), Self-Questionnaire, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and Social Avoidance and Distress (SADS). For data analysis, mean, standard deviation, independent sample t test, frequency analysis, Pearson correlation analysis, stepwise multiple regression analysis, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis were performed using SPSS WIN 21.0. The results of this study showed that, first, self-discrepancy, maladaptive self-focused attention, and gender were the variables that explained the college students¡¯ depression. Second, self-discrepancy was found to have a moderating effect on the relationship between maladaptive self-focused and depression, but not on the relationship between maladaptive self-focused attention and social anxiety. Based on these results, the implications and limitations of this study and suggestions for future research were discussed.
